Disposing of Electronic Storage Devices

The Government of Saskatchewan has updated its Disposal of Electronic Storage Devices Policy. As a result, there are many electronics used across the government that now fall under the scope of this policy, effective August 29, 2022.

This update will lead to a consistent disposal experience across the government. Instead of destroying old phones/tablets and seeing no monetary return, we can now recycle these devices and see the funds donated to a worthy cause. Recycling rare earth metals and plastics will help reduce the government's environmental footprint.

The Ministry of SaskBuilds and Procurement has partnered with SaskTel's Phones for a Fresh Start program to recycle old electronic storage devices. Phones for a Fresh Start helps those fleeing domestic abuse and youth transitioning out of Ministry of Social Services care.

Steps to dispose of/recycle old electronic storage devices

1. Get approval to dispose of the old electronic storage device. A ministry official with disposal authority must approve all disposal requests. This is typically an out-of-scope director or delegated manager.
2. Gather the log-in credentials for the electronic you will dispose of. This includes but is not limited to lock screen codes, Apple IDs, passwords, usernames and security codes.
3. Arrange for device disposal.
   1. If the device contains a GOS asset tag, submit an IT Service Request using ServiceNow to have it wiped and disposed of.
   2. If the device does not contain a GOS asset tag, ensure it is securely wiped by a qualified, authorized service provider and transfer it to Disposal Services or the IT Division Purchasing and Asset Management Branch. Some electronic devices may not be ITD-owned. These go through the disposal program, including Photocopier Program copiers
4. Notify the personnel on your team responsible for disposing of old electronics in your office that you have electronics ready for disposal/recycling. Consult with your immediate supervisor if you are unsure who is the initial point of contact for the intake of electronics ready for disposal.
5. Disposal Services or ITD Division Purchasing and Asset Management branch follows their process to wipe and either sell, donate, recycle or otherwise dispose of the items.
